I recently crossed the nineteen year mark of owning weasels and have not been without ferrets for so much as one day during those years.

Who cares? What does it matter?

Days like today... when I feel as though laughter or even smiling could not be a part of my world...

The cosmic clowns in my life force me to stop and lighten up. Even if they are doing something horrible and destructive--you are forced to laugh at their animation and spirit. How many times they have saved me in one way or another--I can't even count.

Yeah, so my home and self may sometimes have a funk that non-weasel people despise and criticise--whatever. Most of them I'd rather keep out of my home anyhow. They have no clue of the soothing experience of nuzzling one's face into ferret fur and breathing in that musky scent that is unconditional love and true happiness.

And I may have certain people that choose to go for a stroll when I'm doing weasel duty. Their discomfort with leaping and bouncing ferrets--with me unconcerned that they may get their feet bit--just a "be careful of my weasels--well, they wouldn't bite if you didn't dance around like that!"

When the crazy one latches on and draws blood and I am worried about the weasel's well-being--not "oh man, sorry my ferret just ripped out your tendons..." but "oh Baron Weasel, I'm so sorry she didn't know about the poison kisses--mommy still loves you..."

Well, I guess you just have to be a ferret person to understand.

What can I tell ya? Yeah, they are bad, they stink, vet bill are astronomical--they'll bite your feet, hands, and face if they get the chance (well, some of them will). But no matter how bad your day is--no matter how frustrating life has become--ferrets offer something that no other creature or person can match...

Okay, I AM biased--but I still have to pause and look at that little one rubbing himself across my feet--the one ripping stuffing out of my sofa--the one trying to back out of the umbrella stand and failing miserably--the old one curled in my lap and enjoying having her head stroked...

There is nothing that compares. And I am still so thankful for that first little carpet shark/sweater monster to have entered my life and the many years of sanity and peace that weasels have brought me since.

~The Weasel Mommy~

And a little P.S. for Stein (the only reader of the weasel page)--I literally have THOUSANDS of ferret photos to post... Since it appears to be a damp summer, they should soon be coming! It's just the whole sorting them into albums and adding captions that prevents posting... Anyhoo, hope you are well and I look forward to hearing from you...

You've Gotta See This! :)

(Click the link below--it may take a while to load--but well worth it!)

Season's Greetings!

**From all of us at
Mustelid Manor!**

Sirius Black or Sirius Stench?

Mash is right you know... Since we got the new brother, we've gone through a lot. First, it was getting to know him and lots of playing. Then Loki and Malfoy came to visit for a while and we believe that it is rude to be online when we have company. Next, Rikki got sick and despite all of our attention and love--we lost her and are still grieving (especially Winzig--Rikki was her best playmate). It has been hard to write, knowing that Rikki isn't here to help, she's been with us ever since we started this blog. Plus, we know that we will eventually have to write her obituary and move her pictures to the "Past Cagemates" section and well, we just aren't ready to do that yet.

Other things have been changing, too. Now we spend our time running away from the new brother because he is huge, stinky, and tries dragging us all around. Mom says that we need to be patient and deal with it a little while longer--she promises that he won't be like this forever, something about him being in his keyed up teenage years. We aren't quite sure what that means, none of US ever acted like that. Winzig assures us that it is similar to how Baron treated everyone, but that was so long ago and not all of us met Baron.

We've also had a lot of problems with the computer (Aunt Nikki promised that she would build us a new one--we can't wait!) and we have had problems with bad Internet servers. It seems that every time we learn all of the new stuff, Mom switches servers and then we have to figure everything out all over again. But now that the winter months are on their way, Mom will do better with making sure that the computer is working. She doesn't care much during the rest of the year because she is always out doing stuff or working on the yard.

Mom also has literally hundreds of new pictures of us and she has been working on getting new photo albums ready to post online. She seems to get frustrated because she is so far behind in the albums and has over a thousand pictures that need cropped, put in albums, captions created and then posted. Every time she gets an album near to be finished, she finds more pictures of us that need added and she is trying to get them just right (she is very OCD, you know). We will try to keep you up-to-date as to when the pictures will be posted.

Anyhoo, that's what has been up with us. Keep an eye open, we will be posting more over the weeks to come. And oh yeah, the picture above? That was taken in September of the new brother; that's Sirius Black with his adolescent coat (he looks like a regular sable now, instead of a black solid). Mom says it's either his adolescent coat or he's trying to blend in with the rest of us so that we won't know he's coming to attack. Hmm. Yeah. His bad smell kind of gives him away!

~The Weasels of Mustelid Manor~

Just an Update--Nothing Fancy

Yay! Photoworks is up and running again! That means photos of the baby will be coming soon! Let's see, fourteen hours later and we are on 30/399 photos uploaded and these are pre-baby photos... so hmm, in a week maybe, we should have photos posted...

Anyhoo, he is doing well. He had his first quality "out time" with someone other than Mommy in the ferret room, this past weeked. Nikki got doused in the Bitter Apple a few times, but he never broke the skin, even without it. He is doing better all the way around with the biting and I no longer feel compelled to wear jeans tucked into socks with sneakers on when in the ferret room!

His distemper booster went well, sent me into near panic attacks though. I hadn't been back to that vet since Baron went in for his surgery and didn't come home. I started into the panic mode as soon as I pulled into the parking lot--I guess maybe I am still having some PTSD symptoms over Baron. That was a loss that I haven't been able to completely put behind me.

At any rate, the baby weighed in at 3.4 lbs (Winzig was a mere 1.7 lbs!)--not bad for four months old! We are still going with Sirius Black, for now. I'm not completely sure that it fits though. Sadly, I usually call him Big Guy, which just sounds so backwoods PA! :)

~Mustelid Mommy~

More Ravensnest Babies

More examples of black sable ferrets from Ravensnest,
where my little black sable guy came from:

RN's Black as Sin (Jill)

RN's Sirius Black (Hob)

RN's The Dark Lord Voldemort (Hob)

I may be a bit prejudice, but I have no doubts that my little guy is the most handsome of all! Let's just start with, I used an entire bottle of Bitter Apple in three days! His first contact with the Bitter Apple, he bit my forearm, let go, bit a different spot and then took off running, pawing at his mouth and rubbing his face on the floor. As the breeders put it--liberal use of Bitter Apple is a good thing because the ferrets punish themselves when they bite! Amazing stuff, I just never really felt the need to use it until this recent experience with baby teeth.

The next few times, he came over, ready to bite and then you could see the little wheels turning in there as he thought better of it. Then he got smart and started smelling to determine which areas were covered with Bitter Apple and would figure out which areas were safe to bite. Or he'd quickly scale over the Bitter Apple covered feet, launch himself up inside the pant leg, to gnaw on the tasty unbitter human legs underneath. Oh, he is a smart little one! So yes, I basically began bathing in Bitter Apple before getting him out.

He screamed and cried his first few days here, leaping from ferret to ferret looking for his own family. Of course, this was too much for my maternally-inclined older girl, Link; she followed him everywhere trying to console him. But he really only showed interest in Cinnamon and finally established a bond with her. Most often the bond included him hopping around crying until he'd find her and then he'd drag her around as he calmed himself down. This also helped Cinnamon and I bond on greater levels since she now would run to me to swoop her up and save her...

He's still unnamed. He was going to be Sirius Black (since I won't be showing him, it's okay), but now I am not sure. Of course, I'm toying with Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows--with his razor sharp teeth, love for biting human flesh, and his dark coloring--it fits. Time will tell with that, I guess. Don't get me wrong, the biting has eased up significantly. In fact, he is now viewing me as the neck massager and comes over sometimes just for love (the Bitter Apple is still sprayed liberally upon me when I am down on the floor cleaning their cage--otherwise, I've had the new bottle almost two weeks and it is still pretty much full).

He is finally sleeping in the big cage with everyone else. I've caught him sleeping with the others a few times, but he still often prefers his birth family scented blanket that came home with him from the breeders. He's getting along well with the other weasels and is playing pretty well with me, too. He's knocked the bullying, cockiness out of Cinnamon and they are best of pals now. Overall, he's turning into that big, sweet baby that I was hoping for...

~Mustelid Mommy~

The End of Debate

Well, I'm sure that you guys knew I couldn't resist... on July 21st, I went and adopted my first baby ever, my first ferret from a breeder, and my first ferret from Ravensnest. Yup, it's the beautiful little black sable hob that we had been posting pictures of!

I decided that $650 was a ridiculous price for staining my tiny, little observation deck and steps (that didn't even include touching the big deck!)--regardless of whether it meant the difference between a Ravensnest baby or not. Three gallons of stain would normally be $70--that week, it was marked down and three gallons could be purchased for $60--then they kicked in a sweet rebate deal and I walked away with my three gallons for $45! So yeah, saving $25 on the stain and saving myself $600 altogether? Not even a question! If someone offered me $600 to stain the deck, would I do it? Hell, yeah! Is it essentially the same thing? Yup, it sure is!

That same week, a friend clued me in on a tip that the professionals used when doing her deck--old socks and plastic gloves. Apparently, when they stained her deck, they used plain old cheap lunch lady plastic gloves and then slipped a tube sock over top--dip it in the stain and rub the deck--could it get any easier or cheaper? Plus, she even donated a bunch of her old socks and an extreme amount of plastic gloves! But I guess this helps prevent runs, wastes less of the stain, and the spindles no longer have me trembling in my shoes--they will actually be the easiest part now! I may not TOTALLY ruin the deck after all...

So we add the super stain sale and the friendly tips--all within the same week as I am debating the ferret deal--a sign? Perhaps. Then just days before I am to make the trip, one of my psychic friends calls--mentions that her insomnia forced her into turning on the TV at three am and what does she happen upon? The ferret special featuring the Buckeye Bash and as I learned from group postings that week--appearances by Dr. Ruth and the Ravensnest ferrets. Mere coincidence? I think not!

So, I ended up scrubbing the deck and steps last weekend--hopefully, this weekend I'll be motivated and do the staining. It really makes the $250 for the baby much easier to justify. $650 to have my deck professionally stained or $300 spent when doing it myself and getting a new weasel... I see the new guy as having just saved me a couple of hundred dollars! Well, okay, it seems logical to me--that's all that matters, right?! ;)

~Mustelid Mommy~

The Black Solid Hob

Hard to believe that he can go from that tiny, funny-looking, little baby to such a stunning boy! He reminds me of an even darker Crimson. Anyhoo, that's the guy reserved to become part of the Mustelid Manor family. Of course, having not heard from the breeders since the last pictures were posted, I assumed that they were either keeping him or that the other breeder was.

So tonight, I get the message that they are ready to start taking deposits. Oops... How do I break it to the ferrets that their baby brother fund was how I made the trip to see their Aunt Nikki and her kiddos, Loki and Malfoy, in Rhode Island?

So, my quote for staining the little deck and steps ($650) and putting up gutters ($1150--just in the back of the house!) was $1800, more or less. Plus I have three trees that I need taken down ASAP @ around $400 a tree. That's $3000 that I don't have. So, I'm thinking if I buy the deck stain and try to do the deck myself (I make such a mess when it comes to things like that)~maybe, just maybe; I would have enough money and I wouldn't have to tell the weasels what I did. The trees and gutters I pretty much have to leave to the professionals (the trees at the very least). I don't know what else to do. Any advice?

I really hate to break their hearts again.

They were already picking out names~keeping with the parent's names: RN's Fireball of FSF (chocolate hob) & FSF's Tootsie Roll of RN (chocolate solid jill) and also keeping in mind the Harry Potter theme that Ravensnest frequently uses... It really would be cruel to let them down yet again. I am so torn.

Oh yeah, that's the one that the breeders are keeping;
RN's Honeyduke's (a chocolate solid hob).

~Mustelid Mommy~

Baby Brother?

RN's Fireball of FSF and
FSF's Tootsie Roll of RN
five kits born April 23, 2007.

The jill.
Three hobs,
color undetermined
as of yet (perhaps
chocolate solids).

The black solid hob.

Mom finally put her name on a waiting list for a Ravensnest ferret. For those of you that don't recall, Mom was looking into adopting Stinky at one point, but it didn't work out as we hoped. We recommend the following sites for more pet skunk info and pictures: Owners of Pet Skunks (OOPS!); Skunks as Pets; and for info on wild skunks try: this site. Mom promises us few things in life, but here they are:

1) As much love as she can give us
2) That we never have to leave~this is our forever home
3) That she will try not to get mad when we are bad
4) That we will have at least one Ravennest brother
5) That, if at all possible, we will have a skunk cousin living with us

Thank you, Stein, for the picture!

~The Weasels of Mustelid Manor~

Anubis Has Our Vote!

Okay, we spotted Mash's Contest and felt that we had to speak up...

For one, Anubis is actually pretty awesome! Remember, weasels are known for silent observation. In our opinion, Anubis is elegant, graceful and intelligent. Mash looks like she ran into a wall or half of her face got cut off. Graceful? Elegant? Don't forget the flying poop incident and toilet gazing!

Mash is just your typical trailer-trash, dumpster-diving, her mama don't know which alley cat produced her Humane Society butt, Mojo Jojo looking (think Powerpuff Girls), flea-bitten feline.

Look at that skanky pose!
<------Whorrific!!! So she thinks of herself as a Princess. Big whoop. In our book, Princess stands for a spoiled brat that thinks much more highly of herself than anyone else ever could; that has no clue that she is no better than anyone else; that believes that the world owes her anything and everything that she desires; in essence, a skank that can't admit that she is just your run-of-the-mill skank and not truly fantastic~well, where is the honor in ANY of that?

Mash is just a snooty, catty, conceited feline. We apologize for the vileness of this post, but how she treats every other living creature she comes in contact with is just wrong. And you know, we didn't want to resort to this, but, due to the nature of her recent posts, we felt it only fair to share with you the secret Mash has been hiding...

Mash's dog twin!
That's right, folks! Mash is so common and ordinary that they even make a dog version. Sad, isn't it?

So, rock on Anubis! We truly appreciate your kindness and concern when we are caged too long. The second photo was taken without the flash, as that was initially believed to be the culprit of these strange photos; however, as you can see, that was not the problem.

In light of the photo that Nikki took of Cinnamon (whom is a self-proclaimed superior being), we can only assume that the new kitty is also a teleporter (this is how Cinnamon regularly escapes the confines of our cage) and he has been placed here among us by a far more intelligent species than is currently known to our humble planet. Yet, he tastes like a normal kitty~what a superb recreation...

~Weasels of Mustelid Manor~

She Loves Us Not?

Check out the response our mom had when one of her friends mentioned that he was thinking about getting ferrets and he wondered if there was anything that he should know about ferrets before getting one:

"Sure, I can tell you what to expect with ferrets!

They stink. They bite (as in they latch on to you, especially your feet and hands, often drawing blood and they are difficult to get off once they are in embedded in your flesh). They can be litter-trained, but will still prefer to go in the corners of your house. They are thieves and will steal and hide anything they can drag off (keys, cell phones, wallets, shoes, etc). They are destructive. You will need to ferret-proof your home (they can squeeze into and under tiny spaces, enabling them to find exits to the great outdoors, enabling them to get lost in your furniture, walls, heating units, etc). When they decide they want something, they will find a way to get it--as in, they are extremely STUBBORN.

You cannot punish them by smacking them or anything like that--they will become mean, aggressive, and will attack you on a regular basis (this is why I have so many ferrets, mine have been abused and are quite nasty when they come here--it becomes my job to try and undo the damage that people have done to them). Not to mention hitting or flicking them can do them extreme physical damage--one of mine bit my friend's hand--she flicked him in the head (natural reaction--she wasn't thinking about it) and she fractured his skull.

Make sure that there are vets in your area that work with ferrets because when they are sick, they go quickly. They are predisposed to numerous deadly illnesses that cost a fortune to treat--only to have them die anyhow. Mine have died as young as two years old despite weekly vet trips and small fortunes invested into saving them. Not to mention, you need to get ferrets their shots on a regular basis and some ferrets have bad reactions when they get their shots and die. They are social creatures, so when their cagemates die, they will often give up and quit eating, become depressed and will die shortly after.

They can be problematic if you have other pets or children (ferrets can and will kill small animals, including cats, dogs, most definitely rodents or birds that you have as pets and have been known to kill newborn babies). They are illegal in CA, HI, NYC, and many other places--so don't ever plan on moving back to CA while you have them (that's why I don't live there) and if you are caught with them, they are taken and destroyed. I could go on and on...

But if you decide you can handle all of that, are patient, have a good chunk of money set aside for vet bills, have time to dedicate to them (they are best off in a cage when you can't supervise them--but need AT LEAST two hours out a day to play--they will get depressed if caged too much + I've confiscated ferrets that were never let out of their cages and their muscles actually quit working--I have one that can't use his back legs because of being caged too much), and oh yeah, food isn't cheap either--it needs to be a high protein/fat content ferret food--but if you are sure that a ferret is what you want--go for it. They are a lot of work, but fun if you treat them right and take care of them like you are supposed to.

I would recommend getting ferrets from a shelter or someone that needs to get rid of theirs. Keep in mind too, any ferrets that come from a pet store are likely to have been neutered and descented at too young of an age and will have shorted life spans and increased health problems as a result. Most ferrets you find will be originally from one of the "ferret mills." A better pet will come from a professional breeder and cost big bucks. Good luck!"

We are wondering if she still loves us or if she has finally bought into the mentality that cats make better pets? We are worried that perhaps she has grown tired of us and may be thinking of sending us back to the places that she came and got us from. We are quite scared and depressed. Cinnamon is looking into teaching us all her trick of escaping…

~Weasels of Mustelid Manor~

Ravensnest Ferrets

That big guy could have been our new brother if mom hadn't wasted money on the stinky cat. They finally have two male ferrets available, ready to come live with us--mom could have her pick.

So what does she do? She brings home another fuzz-faced feline. He stinks. He howls ALL OF THE TIME and REALLY LOUD. He slinks around and puts us in mind of those two evil cats on Lady and the Tramp. You know the ones we mean?

So anyhoo, even Mash hates this new one and she chases him around growling and hissing. Don't get us wrong, at least she has her mind off of us and we aren't getting attacked any more (in fact, we are hoping that they eventually kill each other). But mom spent the ferret brother money on getting this new one castrated, mutilated, stabbed, and now for medicine because either Mash or one of the cats where he came from bit him in the family jewels and it somehow poisoned him (our bets are on Mash--she's evil).

But the happy news out of the whole mess is that we may be able to convince him to bite Mash and poison her. We are reading up on this whole cat bite/saliva/abscess deal and hoping that we can make them do each other in.

While Mash was horrible before, she convinced mom to only keep us in one room and Mash is not only convinced the whole house is hers, she still gets to be in our room too. We've heard what she whispers to mom as she sleeps. We know what Mash is capable of. This may be our only hope.

And if ANYONE has ideas on how we can still get our brother, we'd love to hear it. All fine and dandy; the wench, Mash, has attempted to tell on me, but her cries have fallen upon deaf ears.

The mommy came home early the other day. Sure enough, Mash ran to the door verbalizing her anxiety about my appearance in her room (which I was unable to enter, I may add), and the mommy followed her to see what was wrong.

I had just fought the big, fuzzy bath mat and had finished showing it who was boss and was working my way to the bottom of the bathroom garbage can when she busted me. I attempted puffing up and scuttling around like a mad mustelid in hopes of frightening her and altering my appearance enough that she would mistake me for a rabid weasel that had broken into the apartment.

Nope, didn’t work. She has since made my living quarters inescapable. Total bummer.

Overall though, not a bad setup. Having a pretty cool time. Have my own toys, my place stays pretty clean, still fighting with the little mink vixen, Link, and for the record, Ms. N was right, that bitch DOES need a diaper! Every time we fight, she flips out and craps everywhere—and for some reason, I’m the one that gets hauled off and has to go to bed. Not cool.

But anyhoo, there are new pictures in my photo album and it sounds like this is my forever home, no matter what Link thinks, says or does. So be watching for my story to appear on the ferret history and picture page. Our mom learned that from one of the families that she worked with. We've seen Mash sleeping like that a lot through out the years and sure enough, it always rains afterwards.

Mash wanted mom to stay home on her day off and brush her. She thought making it rain would make the parade, fireworks and 4th of July parties go away (plus Mash is afraid of fireworks--what a silly pussy). So she spent the majority of July third sleeping on her face hoping that if it rained, everything would be canceled.

So that’s the scoop guys. We’ve been living with Mash long enough to see through her plots and schemes. The main reason mom worries about the tarantulas getting loose is because if we got bit, it would make us really sick and we might die.

She’s right though, if the tarantulas were out, we would want to catch them and put them in our hidey places. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge is a land of meadows, hills and valleys, all of it covered with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this lovely land. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. There, the old and frail animals are young are again. Those who are maimed are made whole once more. They play all day with other, content and comfortable.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with the special person who loved them on Earth. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then, together, you cross the Rainbow Bridge, never again to be separated.
~Author Unknown~

And Then There Were Five...

"Baron finally came to get Banter. I guess without a receipt of sale, it might be pretty difficult to do. To think that ferret ownership was once this difficult!

Anyhoo, here are the procedures for bringing a skunk into the states:

"She will need to contact the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to get the authorization to bring it into the United States. To get that authorization she will need to provide documentation of having obtained it in a lawful manner and that it has all required shots and vaccinations. Then before it can be brought into any state she will need to provide that document to them and get the required permits either from the Department of Agriculture, their Conservation Department or perhaps both.

If it is coming into Pennsylvania and she wants to sell it of give it away she will also need to get a Propagation Permit from the Game Commission before she can get rid of it.

I don't know if it is even possible to bring a skunk into the U.S. from another country."

Hmm, sounds like it may be a tough one...
~The Weasels~

Happy Birthday!

Rikki is 3 years old today!!!

Harry Potter

Reliable sources have informed us that the new Harry Potter movie: Goblet of Fire will include a scene with frolicking ferrets!

While, of course, we all knew that ferrets are mentioned in several of the Harry Potter books--we had yet to see any in the movies. Hopefully she'll get rid of Mash and our home can be known as "Mustelid Manor."
~The Wicked Weasels of Wayside~

Yet She Likes Sassy...

"Sassy's new mom loves her (that's Sassy curled up in her mom's laundry), but she wasn't sure about the rest of us. She said it about sums up the "living with ferrets" experience!

Well, let's see. First, I got a late start with all the morning stuff. Sigh. Then I took mommy mush to Mom K. I stepped into her pen without checking her location. Big mistake! She came flying out of the litterbox and left 4 punctures in my foot, 2 punctures in my hand (which complement the 4 punctures she left in the same hand yesterday). THEN she noticed the food and I could see her go "Oh. ok." She glared at me suspiciously, but chowed down.

Fortunately, with her out of the nest, I was able to pick up most of the babies and take a quick look. They all look healthy and are growing and squeaking. Yay! I checked a few of them, there's at least 2 boys and 1 girl, but when I put one baby down in a separate location so I'd know which ones I checked, the baby puddle oozed over so I couldn't tell which ones I looked at and which I didn't. There's some black on several of the noses, but right now they have that white baby coat. Very cute though. Great to see they are all growing. Mom K is taking great care of them, she's a great mommy. I just wish she didn't like to puncture me so much!

So, I get out of her pen dripping blood, limp over to get a paper towel, and feel something go squish under my injured foot. Squid-poop! Yuck! Cleaned that up, turned around, there's more! Ugh! Limp to the bathroom, slip in, you guessed it, more Squid-poop! Double yuck ugh! More cleaning..... (Squid is 7.5 and half-blind, and isn't quite making it to the litter box most of the time, as well as starting to have some control issues. I mind, and don't mind, you all know how it is when you have an elderly gentleman you love very much. It's annoying but you can't get mad at him.)

Next stop is Mom B's babies, who are doing well. They chow down on their chicken while I watch them to be sure they are ok. Hob #4, the littlest one, has his eyes open. So I'm sitting there with him, petting him and doing my "welcome to the world" ritual I do for all of them when their eyes open. (Nothing big, it's just me sitting there talking to them now they can see, more a superstition I guess.) He's yawning and rubbing his face and staring at me and being cute as a button, the other babies are on my lap. I put them back in the nest, look down, someone pooped and peed on me! Of course, after all this I was late to work.

What a morning!
Ann

Something in the Air

"I scared mom really bad! Her new mommy sent us a picture showing her all passed out and happy at her new home. Mom feels really bad, but we didn't give her much choice. There were six of us against her, what could she do? We rule the house and everyone knows it. It's a little bit scary though, mom has never parted with any of her weasels. If she could let Sassette go, what about us? She promises each of us when we come through the door that we will never have to leave, that this is our "Forever Home." Would she ever get rid of any of us?

We never thought we would say this, but we are bored without Sassette to pick on and torment! Maybe we screwed up? She got to stay out an extra hour, but we think that was because mom couldn't get her to come out from under the sink (usually it's Rikki that pulls that one). We got a little fan of our own that cools off the top level of our cage (we get the big one at night); plus we got a new Cheweasel (Garden Herb flavor!). She hasn't given us one of those since Nanook moved into the big cage and of course, Rikki wouldn't let anyone else have any. Rikki is being so nasty to everyone--you would think it was her time or something--even Banter hasn't been as big of a jerk as Rikki is being. Mom keeps yelling at her and telling her that girl weasels don't act like that--she doesn't care. She was even a jerk to Link on her birthday (well, so was Banter, but we expected that).

We got new pictures of the Ravensnest ferret babies that will soon be going to their forever homes. Mom was sad because one of the girls still doesn't have a name (Jill #1) and she doesn't have a family anxiously awaiting her arrival. Mom gets sad everytime she sees her picture and wants to go get her--but she says she's tired of hissing, fighting females and only wants males from now on (unless it is a rescue, then she doesn't care).

One of the Ravensnest ferrets had problems yesterday--she has had a hard time carrying (this is her first time). Yesterday, she brought forth a dark-eyed male--the next one would have been a black-footed boy, but he was born dead--then she had a little albino boy, but he is having problems too--finally Sage had to be cut open and the last two babies had to be taken out because they were dead. The nice ladies suspect that they died last weekend when Sage began the markings. Mom got really sad when she found out about that; she knows that the nice ladies are sad, disappointed, and worried for the two boys that Sage still has.

Mom is worried for the little ones too--she is considering getting the albino baby if she can (even though she was holding out for a champagne and a black sable solid). We think that she misses Baron so much that she hopes to find another like him. Ferret people say that albinos have different temperaments than other ferrets and mom misses Baron so much that we think she would probably trade all of us in, just to have him back. Baron was so mean to all of us and he was bad and bit most of her friends; but he was her special boy. We think he probably never had a person treat him like she did and that's why he trusted her and always showed his appreciation the way he did. Like most of us, he learned early that people are bad and hit and hurt you--mom went through a lot of bites and bruises before he loved her back. It's been a month now and she still cries over Baron--she gets sad about Bud Badger too--but not like that. We would almost be willing to put up with a new brother if it meant mom would be happy again.
~The Weasels~

Happy Birthday To Me!

"I've officially lived with mom for a year now. She found out that somebody's ferret died last night and that she was crying and sad--so mom was going to see if they wanted Sassette since no one here likes her. Upon farther digging, she discovered that it was a six year old girl that had the ferret--she only had it two months and already killed it. I guess they didn't know jack about ferrets (they were bathing it every night and thought this was a GOOD thing--mom was pretty annoyed by that--but she was even more annoyed when she found out it probably died because they were forgetting to give it food and water). Our sites are all pretty much informative ones--mostly because we think people need to be better informed about us and don't really know what they are getting themselves into when they get a ferret--yeah, we may look all cute and cuddly, but there is a reason so many of us end up in shelters. Our mom has been saving ferrets like us for almost sixteen years now. In fact, of all of the ferrets she has ever had, only three have been bought in pet stores--all of the rest of us have come from people that were bad to us or didn't understand why we bite. Winzig is the "Little Princess" because she never had to live through the stuff the rest of us have--she came straight from the pet store to live with mom. She doesn't have a clue!

We do have a site, Ravensnest Ferrets, where mom has decided that she will eventually buy two ferrets from (a Champagne male and a Black Sable Solid male), at some point in time. They are somewhere near Greensburg, PA--down by where she goes to the Renaissance Festivals. She went to a ferret expo, last September, with Sharon and met the ladies that breed Ravensnest Ferrets--I guess she fell in love with their ferrets (I guess they have good temperaments--whatever that means) and decided that when she didn't have so many ferrets she would buy from them. So eventually, we will be getting two brothers from those nice ladies!

One of our other sites, Martin's Cages, makes custom cages for ferrets. Mom also got our big cage while at that expo. It's called the "New Englander;" it measures 30 x 24 x 54--our last cage was big, but this one is ferret heaven--we have so much room that we each have separate hammocks, plus hammocks big enough to hold all of us at once, plus all kinds of other neat sleeping spaces)! It is black (mom and black--good grief!), it has three huge levels (each level can be sectioned off creating three separate cages), it is made from PVC-coated wire to prevent rusting (which happens quickly with regular cages), it has a slide out plastic floor in the bottom for easier cleaning, plus the top level is completely removable and can be used as a cage when we go places (there is another plastic floor for this level that also slides in when needed). Usually mom just uses the top part as a separate cage when one of us is sick and is having trouble getting up and down all of the levels. We love our cage; but boy, was mom mad when she brought it home! The lady told her it would only take an hour or two to put together--but it took mom eight hours (they forgot the instructions, the tool for twisting the wire broke, plus mom is blonde), her hands were bleeding by the time she finished and poor Sharon had to deal with her wrath and bitchiness the whole time! But now mom says it was worth it and she loves the cage too!

We included sites for shelters in the area (mom can't save everyone and we don't want her to!), a site specifically about ferret health because there are things you should know about us that doesn't apply to other animal species, a site about legalization is California (poor mom didn't know ferrets were illegal out there when she and Koto moved out there), a site where you can buy neat toys and stuff for us (we can never have enough stuff--we are more materialistic than most people!), plus this neat site we came across that we think tells it like it is when it comes to ferret ownership.

Well, our point is, we noticed that mom had some really neat sites (about poking pussies, steering drunk cartoon characters, and insane plots to overtake the world); even that mean, bitch, Mash, has some pretty cool ones (with other nasty pussies and boxing cats)! But ours are kind of bland in comparison, so we decided to steal one from Matt and Jenn that has this wonderfully hypnotic music (mom is obsessed with it) and our cousin, the badger (mom is obsessed with those, too) doing this funny jig and yelling about snakes and mushrooms--it's too cool! And being that we are thieves and steal everything that catches our eye--we didn't think Matt and Jenn would care. In fact, we don't care if they care.

Keep your eyes open in the future, in addition to our stolen "Badger Badger Badger," we are on a mission to ferret out other cool sites...

~Winzig das Opossum, Rikki Tikki Tavi, Banter Basho Badger, Link #9 (The Cat Killer), Sassette Weasel, Nanook of the North~ The Super Six

Setting the Records Straight

This is our site to tell it like it really is. In case you stupid humans do not know, weasels have traditionally represented silent observation and exposing truths. Rather noble, in our opinion. We are tired of the bad rap we get. Webster's defined weasel as "an agile, flesh-eating mammal, with a long, slender body and short legs;" or the humans' twisted definition, "to be evasive or deliberately misleading." Yahooligans described us as "slim little predators...if any animal can be called bloodthirsty, the weasel may qualify because it kills its victim by biting into the base of the head and drinking the blood. Weasels often kill far more than they can eat. If they manage to gain entry to a hen house or pigeon coop, they go wild..."

Even ferret is somewhat derogatory: "a weasellike animal, tamed for hunting rats, etc; to force out of hiding with a ferret; to search." Ferret is Latin for fur, thief--we resent that (or is it resemble that?). It was not so long ago that we remember encyclopedias defining us as vicious, untameable animals. And in how many states and cities are we still illegal?! California, Hawaii, Washington D.C., New York City... Humans need to wake up! We are more than just the chicken stealin' weasels you remember from the Bugs Bunny cartoons! We don't claim to be cuddly or anything--we are simply demanding your respect or we will bite your toes...

~Winzig das Opossum, Rikki Tikki Tavi, Banter Basho Badger, Link #9 (The Cat Killer), Sassette Weasel, Nanook of the North~ The Sly Six
