Mustelid Manor Memoirs

"Having an aura of menace is like having a pet weasel, because you rarely meet someone who has one, and when you do it makes you want to hide under the coffee table." ~Lemony Snicket~ (from The Slippery Slope)

The Reality of Weasels

Sometimes I must pause and thank the lords for introducing weasels into my life. I recently crossed the nineteen year mark of owning weasels and have not been without ferrets for so much as one day during those years.

Who cares? What does it matter?

Days like today... when I feel as though laughter or even smiling could not be a part of my world...

The cosmic clowns in my life force me to stop and lighten up. Even if they are doing something horrible and destructive--you are forced to laugh at their animation and spirit. How many times they have saved me in one way or another--I can't even count.

Yeah, so my home and self may sometimes have a funk that non-weasel people despise and criticise--whatever. Most of them I'd rather keep out of my home anyhow. They have no clue of the soothing experience of nuzzling one's face into ferret fur and breathing in that musky scent that is unconditional love and true happiness.

And I may have certain people that choose to go for a stroll when I'm doing weasel duty. Their discomfort with leaping and bouncing ferrets--with me unconcerned that they may get their feet bit--just a "be careful of my weasels--well, they wouldn't bite if you didn't dance around like that!"

When the crazy one latches on and draws blood and I am worried about the weasel's well-being--not "oh man, sorry my ferret just ripped out your tendons..." but "oh Baron Weasel, I'm so sorry she didn't know about the poison kisses--mommy still loves you..."

Well, I guess you just have to be a ferret person to understand.

What can I tell ya? Yeah, they are bad, they stink, vet bill are astronomical--they'll bite your feet, hands, and face if they get the chance (well, some of them will). But no matter how bad your day is--no matter how frustrating life has become--ferrets offer something that no other creature or person can match...

Okay, I AM biased--but I still have to pause and look at that little one rubbing himself across my feet--the one ripping stuffing out of my sofa--the one trying to back out of the umbrella stand and failing miserably--the old one curled in my lap and enjoying having her head stroked...

There is nothing that compares. And I am still so thankful for that first little carpet shark/sweater monster to have entered my life and the many years of sanity and peace that weasels have brought me since.

~The Weasel Mommy~

And a little P.S. for Stein (the only reader of the weasel page)--I literally have THOUSANDS of ferret photos to post... Since it appears to be a damp summer, they should soon be coming! It's just the whole sorting them into albums and adding captions that prevents posting... Anyhoo, hope you are well and I look forward to hearing from you...
